The Other Moonwatch

August 1, 2023

A slideshow of pictures of the Bulova Lunar Pilot Watch I got today.

  • Pros:
    • Has a nicer size (43.5 mm diameter) than the original Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch for my 21 to 22 cm circumference wrist. Don’t call me Arnold …
    • Has the chance to be running more accurate than a mechanical chronometer. High frequency quartz oscillator like in my Tuna.
    • Has an interesting origin story. I think Apollo 15’s Dave Scott pulled a commercial stunt when he did his EVA with his private Bulova that he happened to have taken along to the moon. At the ready when the Hesalite glass popped off his official NASA-sanctioned Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. Yeah, right …
    • The dial is intricately structured with different levels and tracks, very legible.
    • The central stopwatch second glides rather smoothly, the 262 KHz oscillator allows measuring times in 1/10 second intervals, if your fingers are this quick.
  • Cons:
    • The originally mounted leather strap looks cheesy and feels plasticky. Exchanged it right away for the included NATO strap that has an astronautical vibe.
    • Further quirks and features to be determined.
