I’m being ungrateful and have been replacing the Nikon D800 that served me so well shooting the wedding with a new body. Ten days ago at Photokina, mirrorless system cameras were all the rage. I had a look through a Nikon Z7 and found the electronic viewfinder straining to my still blissfully good eyesight. Same with the other manufacturer’s EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens, that moniker should be standard!) camera proposals. Only the Leica SL stood out, but that one is a bit out of my price range, especially it’s autofocus lenses.
I kept the Sony alpha 7RIII for last and had a salesman at a big camera store in Nuremberg demonstrate it to me last Saturday. But when neither he nor his colleagues could master the intricate menu structure to switch that famous “Eye AF” on, a decision was made. Plus, I have a metric ton of Nikon glass …

Hello, Nikon D850! Not much new to learn here. It is like a Nikon D500 swallowed an improved version of the D800 sensor, had a digestive nap and then resumed work. As a camera superhero. That can do anything. It can do fast. It can do ergonomics. But most of all, it can do resolution.

I mean, a 45.7 megapixel backside-illuminated sensor will show up the faults in your lenses faithfully!

But sometimes I prefer the faulty versions!

It, too, has a complex menu structure, but that, at least to me, is a “known known”, not an “unknown known”. 😉
I’ve said it before on this ‘blog, I want a camera to get out of my way when I photograph, and this one does it. So here are some photos from the first few days with it:

So, that’s my new go-to color digital camera. I need more space on my hard drives!
