Autofocus sensors right to the edge of the frame

My main DSLR, a Nikon D 800, is 4 years old and has 80000 actuations. Should I trust it to work flawlessly during this year’s photo projects (especially my son’s wedding)? Not without a backup body, no, I won’t.

Thinking about this empty slot in my camera bags, I vacillated between a Fujifilm X-H1 and a Nikon D 500. The well-executed mirrorless concept, rugged body, enticing Fujifilm film simulations (Arcros! Velvia!), OLED status display and 5-axis IBIS (in-body image stabilisation) were features that spoke in favor of the new Fuji. It is the archetypical shiny new thing, when in fact the finish is rather dull krinkle black paint.

On the other hand, I have an embarrassingly extensive assortment of Nikkor lenses. Enough to momentarily stop GAS (gear acquisition syndrom, you’re learning some new acronyms here … ). The menu system the D 500 uses is not the same as in the D 800 but it is familiar. You don’t want to get lost in the menus when your main camera has just given up the ghost and the bride and groom are waiting!

But the deciding factor in favor of the Nikon D 500 were it’s extensive individual settings for flash. They offer up even more influence to the photographer than those in the D 800 do. Whether I use it with Nikon Speedlights or the Profoto B1X over Air Remote TTL-N, they will be appreciated.

Probably couldn’t have done those right after getting the unfamiliar Fujifilm. So, there’s that.
