The Loneliness Of The Large Format Photographer

The Loneliness Of The Large Format Photographer

It’s been more than six months that I last used my 4×5 inch field camera, but this afternoon, my son and I got out in the woods to gather some spring impressions. I was lucky to have him with me not only for the company, but also because he kept me from destroying my pictures with some stupid errors. First, I didn't set the proper ISO on the light meter, then I didn't take a filter factor into account. Second negatives were taken and errors corrected. On the other hand, he's more enthusiastic with his camera movements, which has resulted in one or two rounded corners when the image circle wasn't as big as one would have liked it to be.
At the third spot, we had to wait about half an hour for the light to return after all was set up. The powers that move clouds in front of the sun are actually enjoying doing this to photographers. Anyway, we frittered away the waiting time playing games on the iPhone. Brave new world!
