I think we Germans are the only people where a traffic light sign is identity-proving for one third of the population. Plus, it’s likeness, the “Ampelmännchen” is very successfully pandered to tourists from the western federal states of Germany who visit east german cities like Weimar to drink from the fountain of german cultural identity (Goethe, Schiller) and gawp at their poorer countrymen.
